At the end of his dramatic career, Shakespeare wrote plays that share a number of features and a certain atmosphere. In this seminar, we will read and discuss three of these late plays. In them, Shakespeare shows a keen interest for instance in fairy tales and the supernatural, and the plays’ famous scenes of reunion and reconciliation are among the most powerful in all of Shakespeare’s works. We will closely read these plays, which continue to fascinate theatre producers and theatre audiences alike, and we will study some of their contexts, performances and aspects of their reception histories.
There will be a short test on Cymbeline in the second meeting, to make sure that we have all read the play.
