The course "European Integration" is designed especially for the Summer University. Different to typical lectures in EU Law or European Studies it is not exclusively addressed to students of legal studies or political sciences but is open to students of all different faculties and study courses. Hence, the course does not focus on the legal issues of European Integration. Instead, European Integration shall be explained in a way close to citizens of and residents in the EU: How did the EU and other kinds of European Integration develop? What are reasons and objectives, what is the EU good for, how does it benefit its citizens? How does it work, and what is the future going to look like? Latest developments will as well be addressed as the historical component, especially beginning with in 1950s. We will not exclusively concentrate on the European Union itself, but also take a look at other forms of European Integration, especially the Council of Europe with its system of protection of Fundamental Rights. The objective of this course is to impart on participants a basic understanding of the ever closer Europe we live in and make them aware of their position, chances and possibilities in "Europe". Participants will be graded based on a presentation (teamwork) and their overall participation in class. |
