Excursion: Dublin – Belfast – Derry/Londonderry
Dates: Preparatory session: Saturday, 19.10.2013, 10am – 1pm Excursion to Ireland: 11.11.-18.11.2013 Follow-up session: Saturday, 07.12.2013, 10am – 2pm
Description: In this course, we will discuss the development of urban Ireland with a focus on the three cities of Dublin, Belfast and Derry/Londonderry, countering the stereotypical representation of Ireland as propagated by various tourism bodies. We will examine various aspects of modern Irish society, including the Celtic Tiger period, the recent economic crisis, and the social impact of both on the urban population. We will also look at issues such as immigration, national identities, and cultures of remembrance on both sides of the Irish border. In Northern Ireland, especially, we will focus on the semiotics of urban space and on the ways in which the demarcation of territory can constitute a declaration of identity at the same time. An accompanying reader including historical, political, and literary texts will be provided.
Credits: In order to receive credit for this course, participants are required to participate actively in both block sessions at university, join the excursion, prepare the texts that will be made available in the seminar reader, and do an oral presentation (to be held either at university or during the excursion itself).
Costs: The excursion will in parts be subsidized out of university funds. However, participants will have to fund their transport, both the flights to Ireland and the public transport in Ireland. They are also expected to pay for their food while on excursion.
Registration: 10 places are available on this course. Preferably, participants should still need credit for the CS II module. Please, register with Clix.
