The seminar gives an introduction to corpus-based methods and techniques. Corpus linguistics offers a broad spectrum of methodologies for contrastive linguistics and translation. In this course, we will get to know a selection of these methods (corpus compilation, corpus annotation, corpus analysis), as well as learn corpora available. The application of these methods will be illustrated with selected research questions in the area of morphology, part-of-speech, semantics, cohesion, etc which are relevant to the comparison of languages and translation studies. Moreover, we will see, how issues related to translation can be solved with corpus-based methods. In the course, you will also have a small project on the discussed issues (team work is possible). The topics of your projects will include differences across languages (e.g. English and German), as well as differences in original texts and translations (translation strategies)
