The nineteenth century, like all other centuries, reinvented Shakespeare and his works according to its own needs and desires. It did this on an unprecedented scale: For instance, more than 800 Shakespeare editions were published in the nineteenth century – the eighteenth century had only produced over 80, and the seventeenth century only 4. In this seminar, we will discuss Shakespeare’s nineteenth-century presences and performances, from romantic Shakespeares and Shakespeares ‘for the family’ to the many Shakespeare burlesques and parodies and to Shakespeare appropriated by the great actor-managers of the era.
Please make sure that you have read Hamlet (in a good edition, e.g., New Cambridge, Arden3, Oxford, Norton) by the beginning of the semester. Some of the texts we will look at will deal with this particular play, which was the most revered of Shakespeare’s plays in the nineteenth century.
