Passionate appeal has existed from the moment the human voice was able to speak in an articulate way. The lyric is among the most ancient of poetic forms and it invariably involves the expression of love as its subject. We will begin our survey in the period of the English Renaissance, at a point when the love lyric was particularly rich in examples, under the influence of Petrarch. Each week we shall look at one or more lyrics, depending on their degree of complexity. Lyric poetry occurs in a fascinating variety of forms: the sonnet is one of the most prominent of these, but there are many others, some resembling a simple song, others more intricate in manner. The love lyric encompasses various other modes: elegy, tragedy, comedy, irony, even satire at times. We shall ask such questions as whether it is possible to speak of a ‘theory of the lyric’, i.e. formulating principles that can be applied to all lyrics. We shall also look at how love lyrics fulfil or work against the convention, and how they may reflect the distinctive characteristics of the age in which they were written.
