In this lecture course, in which we will have the pleasure of welcoming several guest speakers, we will bridge the media divide between literature and film by discussing British literary texts as an influential cultural force in international film-making. The first lectures during the semester will provide an introduction to the questions of how a text moves from page to screen. The following lectures will offer case studies of British, and Irish, literary texts and their film and/or TV adaptations. We will discuss (adaptations of) Shakespearean drama, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Jane Austen’s novels, Charles Dickens’s fiction, Sherlock Holmes, the stories of James Bond and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, to name but a few.
Texts: Students will be expected to read excerpts of literary texts and/or watch films in preparation for individual lectures. Details will be announced in the first lecture. |
