Kurzkommentar |
Tomography is a technique for reconstruction of volumetric 3D model from series of 2D images taken at different perspectives. It is the inverse operation to volume rendering, which is generating an 2D image from a volumetric 3D scene. Tomography is a widely used technique with applications in medicine, biology, materials science, physics and archeology. In this seminar, we first introduce the general concept of tomography together with two basic algorithmic approaches to tomographic reconstruction: direct inverse methods and iterative techniques, sometimes called "algebraic". We then focus in more details on iterative methods as well as their current use in fields of biology and materials science. Finally, we will consider some technical aspects of how tomography can be implemented efficiently on current graphics processing units (GPU) hardware. |
