Sociolinguistics is concerned with those factors which influence the language of an individual within a particular group; it therefore examines the relationship between language and society. As a result we encounter linguistic variation on a number of levels. In this seminar we will discuss a wide range of relevant aspects, for example regional, ethnic or gender-specific characteristics. Other points to be covered are multilingualism, language change and language planning. At the end of the seminar participants should have a good idea of the many reasons why society may have an impact on language and its development. |
