From 1948 on, people from the former British colonies, in particular from the Caribbean and South Asia were encouraged to help Britain rebuild the nation after World War II. Since then, the migration of different ethnic and racial groups to Britain has not ceased. In this course, we will examine how, over the last fifty years, British popular media texts such as films, television programmes and advertising have represented these different ethnic and racial groups and discuss their role in producing stereotypes and misconceptions. Reading texts and watching films/videos in preparation for each class is mandatory for all participants. |
