Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) is an integrative approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methods from Corpus Linguistics and Discourse Analysis. Its aim is to offer insights into language use. Corpus linguistic studies often feature quantitative research, but numbers alone cannot show how complex language phenomena (like the creation of rapport) work. A detailed examination of the data is essential. Discourse studies on the other hand need to include a quantitative aspect to make their interpretations more meaningful and create context. CADS looks in detail at form and function of discourse features such as discourse organisation, rhetoric devices like irony and metaphors, author style or (im)politeness. CADS helps to determine the significance of these features, contributing to the understanding and the development of large pragmatically and discourse analytically annotated corpora. We will focus on how corpora and corpus techniques can be used to examine discourse meaning and style and discuss the compilation of corpora that are useful to discourse studies. To obtain course credit, you will either give an applied presentation or write a paper (please check your respective module description). Topics will be discussed in class. |
