English is widely used as means of communication between both native and non-native speakers across much of the world today. In the process of becoming a world language, it has diversified and developed into a variety of different Englishes, each exhibiting several distinct features in pronunciation, lexis, grammar/syntax and pragmatics, raising the issue of their relationship to existing standards. Participants will gain first-hand insight into several varieties of English, from all three of Kachru’s (1992) circles, i.e. native, second, and foreign language varieties as well as into English as a Lingua Franca in intercultural contexts. We will use a combined discourse analytical and corpus linguistics tool set to analyze real language examples from various English varieties, also taking contact languages and the influence of English on other languages into account. Towards the end of the semester, we will have a look at multilingual and intercomprehensive approaches to language learning and teaching to illustrate additional ways of communicating in an international context. For detailed course requirements please consult the respective module descriptions.
Please note that there will be an optional research methods tutorial in week two of the semester (prospective date: Friday, 30 October, 13-16). Attendance is strongly recommended!
