The doctorate - a step in your career
Quite many graduates consider completing a doctorate after receiving their final university degree. With a PhD degree, they strive to continue a research career or to take up responsible positions in economy or society outside the university. However, those graduates should initially reflect on their motivation for and the benefit of a doctoral degree. Moreover, they have to evaluate whether their competences, personality, and aims in life fit better with a career in science or with an occupation outside academia.
This workshop is offered as a cooperation between GradUS und and the Center for Key Competencies and University Didactics at Saarland University.
It deals with the following topics:
- The PhD as an entrance into a career in science or the labour market outside academia
- Motivation for and procedure/basic conditions of a doctoral project
- My current status: Do I dispose of those competences which are relevant for a scientific career? Are my plans for life compatible with a typical career pathway in research?
- My aims for the future: What do I want to do after the doctoral degree and how can I attain my aims most efficiently?
By dealing with these topics, the interactive workshop supports the participants' decision for or against taking up a doctoral project as the next step of their career. It is targeted at advanced students of all disciplines and PhD candidates at the beginning of their doctorate.
Trainer: Dr. Theo Jäger, PhD in Neuropsychology, since 2008 coordinator and coach/trainer at the Doctoral Training Programme of Saarland University (GradUS), scientific coordinator of the International Research Training Group "Adaptive Minds", member of the QualitätsZirkel Promotion (QZP). |
