Texts are more than simply collections of words and sentences, and many different phenomena interact to make this so. In this seminar we will concern ourselves with both linguistic analysis and computational processing of semantics at a level beyond the sentence -- this is what we mean when we talk about discourse. Possible topics include (but are not necessarily limited to): cohesion & local coherence; text segmentation; discourse parsing; coreference resolution; focus, salience & referring expressions; temporal reasoning & ordering; text summarization; sentiment analysis; and applications such as essay scoring, information ordering, or recognizing text of high linguistic quality. In addition, we will read recent papers about semantic processing which leverage discourse information, including papers on script learning, semantic role labeling and paraphrasing. This course builds on the seminar 'Selected Topics in Semantics and Discourse' (Prof. Pinkal, WS 2015/2016), but students who have not taken this course are also invited and will be able to follow. Course requirements: (4CP) presentation with interactive exercises; participation in discussion and exercises; (7CP) requirements for 4CP plus a term paper.

Literatur

After a few foundational papers in computational discourse, students will read and present relevant papers from recent conferences, workshops, and/or journals. A more detailed reading list will be available closer to the start of classes on the course web page.

Bemerkung

Due to the interactive layout of this course, we might have to limit places. If you want to participate in this course, please send me an e-mail asap (afried@coli.uni-saarland.de). First come, first serve.
